The roof on the north side of the Vista Courthouse collapsed on November 18, 2021, causing the closure of 19 departments, as well as the criminal business office, the Substance Abuse Assessment Unit (SAAU), and the Court Collections Office.
The ironic timing of the collapse, just after almost 2 years of Covid-19 closure, has created quite a bit of havoc and confusion. To his credit, Presiding Judge James Simmons worked diligently to keep the main criminal departments functioning by "sharing" space with several civil and trial departments, both in the new(er) (south) tower and some of the traffic courts.
The Criminal Clerk's Office and SAAU have now (as of June 20, 2022) re-opened. Departments 1-19 have yet to reopen, but we are optimistic some of the courtrooms will be functional within a few weeks.
